Chambray has topped all of the lists I read about “must have” summer basics. I’m not a huge fan of the vaguely western style of most chambray tops, but I got the utility of the “goes with everything” summer fabric. I bought a boatload and decided to make another peplum top using the same fabric as my small, black and white gingham check.

This top was slightly different in that it had a peter pan collar, and a more subtle peplum, without the pleats. I paid close attention to the wearing ease, and thought I had calculated everything correctly, but, once I put in the button flap, realized it was juuuuuust too small, but had already serged all of my seams and it was far too late for alterations. I finished it anyway, and gave it to a friend. At least it’s going to a good home!

Iended up with a ton of fabric left over and was still determined to make something with it, so I used Gertie’s dirndl skirt tutorial to make myself a button front skirt. I’m loving the prevalence of midi skirts this season and one big trend is the button front. It wasn’t at all hard to alter the tutorial to add buttons all down the front. Since I made it about a month ago (in an afternoon, I’ll add. It was SUPER quick to sew up), I’ve worn it several times. It’s really versatile and can be worn with a plain t-shirt (and leggings) for biking, or made more office-appropriate with a sleeveless blouse and ballet flats for work.

Once again, I didn’t get the sizing quite right. It’s a little looser on the waist than I normally like. I also need to add a hook and eye fastener (or something similar) to keep it closed as tightly as I want. The button hole is a little loose and it slides a little bit.  Overall, however, this skirt is super simple and creates the silhouette I love.
